PCAL Workshop 2: Sound Design Remastering
Description
Class Description: Art+Design Labs is excited to offer these special new Pre-College ArtLab (PCAL) workshops designed for high school students. Imagine how much less impactful the movie would be if the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park didn't make a sound. In this workshop, students will be introduced to the significance of sound design in film. Students will be given a film scene stripped of its audio and will use free, beginner-friendly software to replace the audio with an original soundscape. The focus will be on layering audio tracks, using Foley techniques with everyday objects, and redefining the context of sound effects. The workshop encourages students to define mood and atmosphere through sound design, either by emphasizing visual imagery or subverting it.

Instructor: Goldfish Cavanaugh is an animator, audio engineer, character designer, and educator with a BFA in animation from the Kansas City Art Institute. His films flow with exaggerated posing, high energy, and at least one dance break. His snappy motion design and immersive soundscapes create comical cartoons and goofy grins. Goldfish gravitates towards 2D Digital animation but pushes to combine mixed media elements—like clay, collage, and sentient clothes—into his creative process. His passion for inspiring young artists has led him to teach many animation and sound design workshops around the Kansas City area.
